Progression in Swimming: Trusting the Journey, Not the Race

At Aqua Culture Swim one of the most common questions we hear from
parents is:
“When will my child move up to the next level?”
It’s a completely natural question. As parents, we want to see our children
progressing, gaining confidence, maintaining motivation and feeling proud
of what they achieve.
However, swimming progression isn’t about rushing through levels; it’s about
building strong foundations that ensure our swimmers develop great
technique that supports endurance, efficiency, and continued improvement
as they move through the levels of our program.
This post explains how progression works in our program, why readiness
matters, and how you can best support your child on their swimming journey.
Every Child Progresses Differently
One of the most important things to remember in Learn to Swim and
Development level swimming is that swimming is not a competition between
children.
It can be tempting to compare your child’s progress with their siblings or
others in their class, especially when you see another swimmer move up.
However, every child is different.
Children develop skills at different rates depending on many factors (some of
which include):
Confidence and time spent in the water (both in and out of a
structured program)
Attendance
Physical development
Physical coordination and strength
Previous experience
Comfort with challenge
Motivation and mindset
Transparent Outcomes at Every Level
At Aqua Culture Swim, we believe families should always understand what
their child is working towards in their swimming level.
That’s why our program outcomes are completely transparent and can be
viewed at any time through the iClassPro app. Please make sure you have
downloaded the app and can log in to monitor your child’s progress.
Each level has a clear set of outcomes that swimmers need to achieve
before they can move to the next level.
Parents can check progress at their convenience and see exactly what their
swimmer needs to work on to progress to the next level.
How Our Assessment Cycle Works
To keep progression consistent and fair, we assess swimmers on a structured
schedule:
Monthly assessments for all Learn to Swim, Seal, and Dolphin swimmers
Bi-monthly assessments for Stingray and Shark swimmers
This ensures that every swimmer has regular opportunities to demonstrate
progress and receive feedback, while also allowing enough time to develop
the more advanced skills required at higher levels.
Swimmers are assessed by our highly experienced pool deck Supervisors in
consultation with their coaches/teachers.
What happens if my child misses an assessment?
If your child misses their scheduled swimming assessment, they will need to
wait until the next assessment cycle to be assessed. As much as we’d love to
be able to assess at any time, we’re unfortunately unable to assess swimmers
outside of the set assessment weeks, as our supervisors follow a structured
schedule and assess new classes each week. This helps keep the process fair
and consistent for everyone. The good news is that we assess very regularly,
giving swimmers plenty of opportunities to show their progress. If you are keen
for your child to still be assessed, you are welcome to book a make-up class
within the same week as their original assessment. Otherwise, your child will
continue in their current level and will be assessed in the next assessment
cycle.
What Is Required to Move Up?
Progression is based on achieving the outcomes within the level, not on the
time spent in a level. This means the time that each child spends in any given
level can vary between children.
Each swimmer is assessed against the outcomes for their current level.
To progress, children must achieve:
⭐ Three stars against all outcomes ⭐
This means they are demonstrating the skill:
Consistently
Confidently
Independently
Why Some Skills Take Time to Reach Three Stars
You may notice that your child stays on the same number of stars for a
particular skill across multiple assessments. This doesn’t mean they aren’t
progressing.
Often, swimmers are getting closer to mastery but are not yet demonstrating
the skill consistently enough to earn three stars.
Three stars require a swimmer to perform the skill consistently, confidently, and
independently. They may be able to do it sometimes, but not reliably every
time.
When we award three stars, it means the skill is secure ensuring they are truly
ready to start building on that skill.
This system ensures that when a swimmer moves up, they are truly prepared
for the next challenge.
A Range of Abilities Within Each Level
It’s important to remember that every swimming level includes a range of
abilities. Within the same group, there will be swimmers who are at the upper
end of the level and others who are still building the early foundations but all
are working toward the same set of outcomes.
As progression is based on achieving specific skills, being the fastest swimmer
in the lane or having a strong-looking stroke doesn’t always mean a child is
ready to move up. Readiness also depends on consistency, confidence, and
demonstrating all required skills independently.
Each swimmer’s journey is unique, and our focus is always on ensuring they
have mastered the full set of outcomes before progressing to the next stage.
Why Moving Up Too Soon Isn’t Helpful
It might seem like progressing quickly through the levels is a good thing but in
swimming, moving up before a child is ready can actually have negative
impacts.
If a swimmer enters the next level without the fundamentals, they may
experience:
Increased anxiety
Reduced confidence
Decreased stroke efficiency
Struggling to keep up with the other swimmers in the lane
Gaps in technique
Increased chance of injury
Feeling overwhelmed or discouraged
Reduced enjoyment of swimming

Our goal is not just progression...
It’s successful progression.
A strong foundation at each level leads to long-term confidence and
enjoyment of swimming.
Fundamentals Matter
Every level in our program is designed with purpose. Each skill that is learnt is the building block for another skill that comes later. Children who master the fundamentals become stronger, more capable swimmers as they move through Development levels and beyond.
How Parents Can Best Support Their Swimmer
The best way to help your child progress is to focus on:
✅ effort over outcome
✅ technique over speed
✅ consistency over comparison
Celebrate the small wins because they often lead to big breakthroughs.
