Things Other Parents Won’t Tell You About Swimming Lessons

  1. Progression is not always linear

Children can sometimes plateau for several reasons, some of which are developmental and completely out of their control. If you are concerned about your child’s progress, please talk to us. Sometimes small steps forward are actually big wins and are worth celebrating.

  1. Learning to swim is an investment

Teaching your child to swim is a life- long skill that could ultimately save their life, it requires commitment.  If you live on the Northern Beaches, where we are surrounded by incredible places to swim, we believe that teaching your child to swim and be safe in and around the water, should be a priority. If your child can swim, you have the peace of mind that they will always be safe, even when they are in the care of others.

  1. Your child won’t always love their lessons

While we do our very best to make learning swimming fun, not every child will love every lesson. Consistency is key and it is important to attend lessons regularly, even if your child is resistant. If you talk to us, we can give you some strategies to help you when your child objects to swimming.

  1. Comparison is NOT helpful

All children progress at different times and in different ways, please don’t compare your child to their siblings, their friends or others in their class. Positive reinforcement of the things they do well is crucial to their enjoyment and progress.

  1. Moving up to the next level too early can be counterproductive

There is no doubt that watching your child move up through the swimming levels is rewarding. However, when a child progresses too early, they can miss out on important components of stroke development, and this can be detrimental to their swimming in the long term. If a child is struggling to keep up in their lesson or is finding it difficult to complete the drills or follow the instructions, this can be demotivating for them.  It is important to trust the process.
